On the Way: How Faith is Formed in the Middle of the Journey
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is almost always on the move. He’s walking from town to town, meeting people in ordinary places, stepping into conversations, and inviting people into something more. He doesn’t wait for people to arrive with everything figured out. He meets them in the middle of their lives, right in the middle of their questions, their uncertainties, and their everyday routines. He meets them “On the Way”.
This summer, we are climbing aboard this journey with our campers. Faith is not presented as something a camper needs to already have in place before they arrive. It’s something they begin to explore, experience, and grow into, step by step, throughout their lives. It’s a journey and a week of camp can be a part of that.
For many campers, that journey can begin in simple and often unexpected ways. It might be a conversation on the walk back to the cabin after an activity. It might be a quiet moment sitting by Geneva Lake, watching the water settle at the end of the day. It might be trying something new, climbing higher than they thought they could, speaking up in a group, or simply feeling known in a way they haven’t before. One of the most meaningful parts of Jesus’ ministry is that He never invited people to follow Him alone. He was constantly bringing people together, forming a community out of individuals who otherwise may never have crossed paths. Fishermen, tax collectors, every day ordinary people were all invited into the same journey, learning and growing alongside one another.
That same sense of belonging is something we are invited to be a part of with Jesus. At camp, cabins become small communities. Shared meals turn into conversations. Strangers become friends, and over the course of a few days, those friendships begin to feel like something deeper.
Paul in his letter to the Ephesians (2:19-20) says “So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.” NLT
Paul tells us that we are no longer strangers or outsiders, but members of God’s family. At camp, that truth moves from something we read to something we begin to experience.
At Covenant Harbor, this is a space where campers can take the right next step of faith, build relationships that matter, and learn a little more about who Jesus is and what he is like in the Bible but also in our lives, not just in big moments, but in the ordinary ones as well. Join us this summer, as we all experience a little more of Jesus “On the Way”.
