Faith in Every Activity Part One

How Faith Formation Flows Through Every Part of Camp

At Covenant Harbor, we believe faith isn’t just something that happens in a chapel service or Bible study; it’s woven throughout every part of a camper’s experience. For us, faith formation means creating space for campers to discover who God is, what God is like, and how to walk alongside Jesus. From morning devotionals to cabin conversations, from big moments of adventure to quiet meals with friends, spiritual formation shows up in every activity we do. Come with us as we explore faith formation at camp in a two part blog series.

Research supports this lived experience: in Christian summer camp environments designed for faith formation, participation in spiritual and relational activities produces outcomes that are immediate, subsequent, and lasting, including growth in faith, community connection, and spiritual practices (Sorenson 2018).

Worship That Shapes the Day

Worship is giving worth to something bigger than ourselves, something we are connected to and it shapes who we are. As Christians, we worship together to deepen our connection with one another and to remember God’s story of love. Worship calls for a response; it invites us to participate in that story and to take our place within the larger narrative of God’s work.

Worship isn’t confined to a single scheduled gathering. Large-group song times, cabin devotions, and quiet reflection by the lake create space for campers to encounter God both individually and in community.

This reflects what scholars describe as a faith-centered camping model: a ministry environment that intentionally pairs relational support with spiritual engagement to create meaningful outcomes in participants’ lives (Sorenson 2018).

At camp, worship looks like more than songs and messages. It also happens while walking in nature, exploring new activities, or even trying a new food. Campers engage heart, body, and mind, deepening their awareness of God’s presence in every part of life.

Faith in Friendships and Cabin Life

Cabins are more than sleeping spaces; they are micro-communities where campers learn to live out Christian community in real relationships. Camp community is temporary yet deeply relational. Counselors, campers, and cabinmates live alongside one another for a week, sharing everyday life together.

Simple actions eating together, encouraging one another, praying with each other, playing, and listening well become expressions of Christian character and community growth.

Research on retreat and camp experiences shows that immersive overnight environments are associated with increased faith engagement, spiritual relevance, and self-confidence among young people, especially in the months following the experience (Refreshing Mountain 2025).

These relational moments are where campers embody community not as theory, but in practice. Outdoor research also shows that camp participants report increased empathy, optimism, and readiness to contribute to their communities after short-term camp experiences (Kirchhoff 2024).

What it all Means

Faith formation at Covenant Harbor isn’t confined to a stage, a schedule, or a single spiritual moment. It unfolds in worship and in shared moments. It grows in cabins and on climbing towers. It deepens through challenge, conversation, and community.

When campers worship together, live alongside one another, and step into new adventures, they are not just participating in activities, they are practicing faith. They are learning to trust, to listen, to encourage, and to notice God at work in the ordinary and the extraordinary.

Part of what makes camp so powerful is this integration. Heart, body, mind, and spirit are engaged together. Faith is not separated from life; it is lived within it.

In Part Two, we’ll explore how conversations, creation, and the daily rhythms of camp continue shaping campers long after the week ends and how those ordinary moments often become the ones God uses most.
